Connecting with nature

I began my journey in education with leading urban students through experiences in nature. In 2017, I was a Blum Summer Field Intern through UCSD's Cross Border Initiative. Immersed in the vibrant and diverse communities of South East San Diego, I fell in love with the work: the sense of wonder, love, and joy that children express when they connect with nature has fueled me ever since!

The majority of young people now live in urban areas. The majority of urban youth are low income and people of color. These children don't have equal access to natural spaces, and fewer opportunities to build strong and meaningful relationships with the ecosystems of life that support us all. Equitable educational access is a part of my core belief, and I strive to bring students, science, art, and nature together.

Environmental Arts

Science and art both rely on keen observation and interpretation of the phenomenon we notice in our world, small and large.

I blend scientific reasoning with creative writing and art so that students articulate what they notice, wonder, and feel about nature, so that they may create deep personal connections and share it with their peers and community.
